APPENDIX C — Motormaster® V Configuration
Motormaster V (MMV) is a Variable Frequency Drive
(VFD) that varies the condenser fan speed. Within the MMV, a
reverse-acting, proportional-integral control loop is utilized to
maintain the liquid line pressure at a set point. The VFD will
vary the motor speed to drive the liquid line pressure to the set
point during ambient temperatures below 60 F.
The set point is lower than a normal operating pressure
during summer operation. At ambient temperatures above 60 F,
the fan will go to full speed (60 Hz or 50 Hz depending on
model) and remain there since it cannot go fast enough to bring
the pressure down to the set point. When the VFD is at full
speed, it acts just like a fixed speed fan. When the ambient air
temperature drops, a fan running at full speed draws too much
air across the condenser coil to maintain a minimum condens-
ing pressure/temperature. In these conditions, the VFD will
slow down and begin to maintain the set point.
Depending on the operating mode, the default set point for
R-22 is 135 psig on the liquid line. The default set point for
R-134a operation is 80 psig on the liquid line. The feedback
signal to this controller is a 0 to 5 VDC pressure transducer,
HK05YZ007 or equivalent, that is attached to a liquid line port.
Configuration —
The MMV is configured for 1 or 12
operation modes based on the inputs to the small terminal
block. The 30GTN,R units use operating modes 1-4 and
30GUN,R units use modes 9-12. In these configurations, the
MMV modulates the fan speed based on a 0 to 5V feedback
signal on pin 5. A “start” jumper wire is required to con-
figure the drive for 50/60 Hz operation and input voltage. A
“setpoint” jumper wire is used to toggle between R-22 and
R-134a set points for condensing pressure. See MMV Configu-
ration Table below for proper inputs. Once the drive is
powered, it will change to the mode selected according to the
inputs. No additional programming is required.
